Project 05: F Newsmagazine
Bonus points if you can tell me what a “newsmagazine” is.
F Newsmagazine is the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s student publication. It’s published monthly during the school year, and one special edition gets distributed over the Chicagoland area in the summer. During my tenure here, I worked as a Designer, Illustrator, Art Director, and Assistant Art Director.
November 2016: Art Direction
Directing the overall aesthetic of the newsmagazine, I selected the color and texture palettes, assigned designers their production tasks, and collaborated with our managing editor to troubleshoot along the way.
24 pages, spreads measure 16.5 inches x 22 inches
Note: the cover of the issue shows "Students Respond to Decision 2016: Begins on page 13," this was an eight page insert art directed by F Newsmagazine's regular Art Director, Sevy Perez, and has been excluded from the gallery.
Spread Design
The selection below are some of my personal favorites during my time at F Newsmagazine. All spreads were published on 16.5 x 22 inch newsprint using a four-color process.
How to Vote
This design reflects the complex process of voting in the United States. The muddled layout and chaotic illustrations depict the pitfalls one may face during the voting process. Sophie Lucido Johnson and Zee Peng were the word wizards behind the text, and I was the brains behind the layout and illustration.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Epilogue
As I approached my own college graduation, I created Epilogue to explore the amount of hope placed in the diploma itself, as well as the uncertainty college graduates face the moment they receive their diploma.
Details: 11 x 17 inches
Digital Illustrations
In addition to its print circulation, F Newsmagazine is also published digitally. These are a selection of digital illustrations created specifically for online publishing.
